Residents Asked for Cooperation During Sewer Work

Posted: 10/02/2012

Residents and business owners within portions of the Oneida County Sewer District will be asked to temporarily refrain from water use as crews work to rehabilitate local sewer mains.

Oneida County has contracted with Insituform Technologies, a specialized provider of sewer rehabilitation services, to install a new, jointless sewer pipe that minimizes root and water infiltration, improves flow, and provides for a more structurally sound pipe without the need for excavation. Temporary disruptions of sewer service in localized areas will be experienced as work is completed.

“This work, which is one of several construction projects being undertaken as part of the District’s consent order compliance program, is the most cost- and time-efficient means to repairing these aging sewer lines, “ said Steven P. Devan, P.E., commissioner of the Oneida County Department of Water Quality and Water Pollution Control. “While we are doing our best to minimize the inconvenience to our residents and business owners, we truly appreciate the understanding and cooperation of everyone during this crucial project.”

Work will be completed in targeted neighborhoods, according to the following approximate timeframes as provided by the contractor:

  • Village of Yorkville: October 9-24, and November 28-29
  • Village of Whitesboro: October 25-November 6, and November 29
  • Town of New Hartford: November 7-19, and November 30-December 3
  • Village of New York Mills: November 21-December 18
  • Village of Oriskany: November 5-December 3
  • Town of Whitestown: November 13-December 4

Work on individual sewer lines will last approximately 8 hours. During this period, sewer service connections will be temporarily sealed off from the main line in the street and residents will be asked to limit the flow of wastewater into sewer lines to an absolute minimum in order to prevent backups into homes and businesses. This includes:

  • Refraining from using washing machines and dishwashers.
  • If you must shower; leave the water in the tub until service has been restored.
  • Disconnecting any sump pumps.

Residents will receive specific service interruption notices from the contractor, approximately one week prior to scheduled work, and again 24 hours prior to the work.  These specific contractor notifications will include more detailed schedule information, homeowner instructions, and contact information.
