Intergenerational Valentine's Day Event

Agency: Compeer of the Mohawk Valley
Volunteer Projects: Intergenerational Valentine’s Day Event
Summary: Beginning as early as December 18, 2008, youth volunteers from Compeer of the Mohawk Valley, began preparing for a 2009 Intergenerational Valentine’s Day Event for the residents of Heritage Health Care Center in Utica. They wrote a plan for the event, mailed letters seeking volunteer participation, set a date with Heritage Health Care Center for the event, worked with children in John F. Hughes Elementary School’s After School Program on Valentine’s Day cards, created and sent postcards inviting youth to participate in the event, ordered materials for the event, continued outreach by making phone calls and speaking to youth, made Valentine’s Day cards and on February 19, 2009, put on the event.
On the day of the event, youth volunteers teamed up with adult residents to work on and complete a Valentine’s Day craft. Choices included a heart shaped trinket box with a photo or a woven candy basket. The youth volunteers engaged in conversation and socialized with residents, served them coffee, tea and dessert and helped them return to their rooms, many times pushing wheel chairs.
The event was a wonderful success. It was heart warming to see both the youth and the adults enjoy the activity and intergenerational socialization.
