Thanksgiving Day Cards

Agency: Boys and Girls Club of the Mohawk Valley
Volunteer Projects: Thanksgiving Day Feast, Thanksgiving Day Cards, Christmas Toy and Clothing Drive and Window Painting
Summary: During the month of November, youth volunteers from the Boys and Girls Club’s Rome site located at Bellamy Elementary School, spent weeks preparing for a Thanksgiving Feast for their siblings and parents. They made decorations, invitations and placemats for the Thanksgiving dinner. The over 90 youth volunteers took great pride while working extremely hard to make this day special. On the day of the event 20 Boys and Girls Club staff joined the 90 youth volunteers in serving 350 people from their community. It was hard work, but the general feeling of happiness had every volunteer smiling as they served Thanksgiving Day dinner to youth members and their families.

Also during the month of November, 80 youth volunteers and staff from the Boys and Girls Club’s Notre Dame site in Utica, enthusiastically made Thanksgiving Day cards for the residents of St. Joseph’s Nursing Home. Being concerned that many of the residents may not have family or friends to enjoy Thanksgiving with, they wanted to bring some joy and happiness to the residents by sending a nice message to them from a homemade card.
Youth volunteers and staff from the Boys and Girls Club’s Parkway site in Utica collected donated toys and clothing during the month of December. The toys and clothing were given to Children’s Miracle Network staff for distribution to children spending the holidays in St. Luke’s Hospital.
Boys and Girls Club youth volunteers and staff from the Strough Middle School site in Rome, painted windows at Staples this past December. The youth volunteers and staff thoroughly enjoyed themselves and felt it was a good way to bring children together (for a good cause) and spread some holiday cheer while making their community a little more beautiful and special for the holidays.
