Volunteer Projects: Intergenerational Valentine’s Day Event, National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day

Summary:  During the month of January, youth volunteers from Compeer of the Mohawk Valley, spent time planning an Intergenerational Valentine’s Day Event for adults at the Heritage Health Care Center in Utica. The goal of the event was socialization; having youth interact with older adults. The youth volunteers made cards for the event and planned what activities the youth and adults would participate in together. The day of the event youth and adults made crafts, played card games and did word searches. The day concluded with all having a piece of cake that was served by the youth.

During the spring break in February youth volunteers made bookmarks to be given away at local libraries and posters to be distributed to area businesses, agencies and other area locations. Information relating to National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day (May 3, 2011); positive mental health and the importance of friends, was the theme of their artistic creations.
