What is a Notary Public ?

A responsible person appointed by New York State to witness the signing of important documents and administer oaths.

Why are documents notarized?

To deter fraud.  An impartial witness (the Notary) ensures that the signer of documents are who they say they are and not imposters.  The Notary makes sure that the signer have entered into agreements knowingly and willingly.

Does notarization mean that a document is "true" and "legal"?

No.  Notaries are not responsible for the accuracy or legality of documents they notarize.  Notaries certify the identity of signers.  The signer is responsible for the content of the documents.

How do I become a Notary?

Notaries are commissioned after they pass an examination and their applications are approved.  The County Clerk's office provides schedules and testing booklets for individuals wanting to take the Notary Public License test.
