Giant Hogweed Prevention and Control

Giant Hogweed is a hazard because of its potential to cause severe skin irritation in susceptible people. Plant sap produces painful, burning blisters within 24 to 48 hours after contact. Plant juices can also produce painless red blotches that later develop into purple or brown scars that may persist for several years.

Giant hogweed can be controlled. One method is to cut the entire root just below ground level with a sharp shovel or spade. All seeds must be removed from the site to prevent re-growth.  Weed B Gon Max is registered for the control of hogweed. Roundup Poison Ivy and Tough Brush Killer will also work.  It is important to protect the skin and eyes when dealing with this plant.  To report giant hogweed to the Department of Agriculture and Markets, call 1-800-554-4501 ext 72087
