Web site Addresses Hot Weather Health Risks

The hot, humid weather that marks the summer season in Central New York brings with it concerns of heat related illnesses and complications to which children are particularly susceptible. The Oneida County Health Department has posted a Heat Safety Fact Sheet and a Heat Index Chart on its web-site to assist parents and child care providers in preventing, recognizing and treating heat related illnesses.

“Exposure to high temperatures and humidity can mean more than ‘fun in the sun’ and could result in serious health problems for children during the summer months,” said Eric Faisst, Director of Health.  Faisst added, “The information on our web site is intended to keep our children safe and comfortable, especially when the temperatures are high.”

The fact sheet contains information on:

§         avoiding heat related illnesses

§         symptoms and treatment related to heat related illnesses

§         heat safety for the transport of children in vehicles

§         a heat index chart that will allow child care providers to distinguish between comfortable, uncomfortable, hazardous and dangerous weather
