Title:
BE PREPARED FOR BREAST CANCER

Breast cancer is common, since treatment is best when it is caught early, screening is important.  Women over forty should have an annual mammogram. Those with a family history may need more testing.  With an annual mammogram, the cancer can sometimes be identified before it can be felt.

About 10% of mammograms are abnormal.  Further testing may be recommended, such as ultrasound or biopsy.   If breast cancer is found, there may be options for treatment.  A “lumpectomy” may be appropriate or a mastectomy, meaning breast removal.  Surgery may be followed by chemotherapy, hormone therapy or radiation.  Treatment is based on various characteristics of the tumor. Follow-up continues for a lifetime with regular check-ups.

Emotional support is offered by local groups listed in the newspaper. On-line sites such as breastcancer.org can be very helpful.  For information about screening, call Oneida , Madison , and Herkimer Healthy Women Partnership at 315-798-5206.  The local office of the American Cancer Society is reached at 315-724-8125 or 315-738-0517.

Breast cancer is best combated by avoiding delays.  Mammograms should be scheduled regularly and abnormalities should be followed up quickly.  This approach to health care is important for peace of mind about the future.
