Cholesterol is a substance that is present in our bodies. Cholesterol can attach to the inside of arteries, blocking the flow of blood and resulting in heart attacks and strokes.

If cholesterol level is high, meat, eggs, and dairy products should be decreased in the diet.  The second step is to exercise more.  Getting regular physical exercise takes determination, but it can become a habit.

Medication for cholesterol is generally safe and effective.  Statins are used to keep blood cholesterol levels low.  The side effects are minimal.

The first step to good health is to have a blood test for cholesterol and talk to the doctor.  Patient and doctor should agree on a treatment plan. Cholesterol level should then be monitored once or twice a year.
