A Message From The Director...

January is National Mentoring Month. It is no secret that Mentors are one of the best tools available in the youth development process. Many kids who are not afforded healthy home lives can still get on the right track if they are exposed to positive, healthy role models outside of the home. In fact even kids who have a mom and dad that they can rely on benefit from teachers, coaches or youth leaders that can help guide them through childhood.

Oneida County is a leader in New York State when it comes to mentoring. We have a number of excellent programs that connect kids to positive adult role models. The two obvious examples are Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oneida County and Compeer. You may recall that a few months ago we worked with both agencies to develop a Mentoring Workshop that helped this organizations train their volunteers. While we talk a lot about these two agencies almost all of our programs use a degree of mentoring in their curriculum.

The best part about mentoring is that it is perhaps the easiest way to volunteer and make a huge difference in the life of a young person. If you’ve thought about being a mentor, now is as good a time as any. Contact the Youth Bureau at 798-5027 right away and we will connect you with one of the agencies in need of help.
