Thea Bowman House
Agency: Thea Bowman House
Volunteer Projects: Planting vegetables in garden beds, Receptionist Work, Tutoring and Reading to elementary students and residents at Focus Rehabilitation and Nursing Center
Summary: Youth volunteers from the Thea Bowman House planted and raised vegetables in garden beds at the Utica Public Library, Linwood Place and Lafayette Street in Utica. The vegetables were given to the Thea Bowman food pantry for distribution to their clients. The youth volunteers discovered new abilities that they didn’t know they had and found satisfaction seeing the results of their hard work and knowing that their work benefitted people in need.
Throughout the year youth volunteers performed receptionist’s duties; answering telephones, taking messages and delivering messages. These efforts played an invaluable role in the daily operation of this non-profit.
During the summer months youth volunteers tutored elementary students and read to them as well as residents at the Focus Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Utica.
