Picente Unveils Hospital Parking Garage Plans

Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. today released the renderings and site plan of the county’s $55.8 million, 530,000 square-foot parking garage facility that will adjoin MVHS’s Wynn Hospital in downtown Utica.

“Oneida County has been an invested partner in MVHS’s hospital project since day one, supporting every aspect of bringing state-of-the-art healthcare to this region,” Picente said. “This parking garage is essential to its success and there was no question that we would do whatever it took to make sure that it was constructed. This county facility will not only provide safe, convenient parking for staff, patients and hospital visitors, but will also deliver much-needed general public parking for the burgeoning U-District and our other major investments in downtown Utica: the Adirondack Bank Center and Nexus.”

The five-level Oneida County parking facility will accommodate 1,330 vehicles, with approximately 1,050 spots being dedicated to the needs of the hospital and 280 available for general public use. The ground floor, as well a roughly half of the second floor, will offer public parking to those visiting the hospital or other downtown destinations. A portion of the ground floor will also be reserved for visitors to the emergency room. The remainder of the second floor, as well as all parking on the third, fourth and fifth floors, will be dedicated to hospital staff parking.

"The new downtown parking garage is extremely important for the Wynn Hospital project as it will provide convenient and protected parking to our patients, their family and friends, and our staff," said Darlene Stromstad, FACHE, president/CEO of Mohawk Valley Health System. "Our sincerest appreciation goes out to Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente, Jr. and the Oneida County Board of Legislators for working diligently to ensure the construction of this vital parking garage."

Situated between State, Oriskany and Cornelia streets, the post-tensioned concrete structure will have multiple entry points for public and staff parking. It will also feature a climate-controlled pedestrian corridor that connects the main entrance of the hospital to the ground floor of the parking garage. A heliport that will serve the hospital’s emergency transport needs, will be located above the last parking level on the top of the structure.

Included in the 1,330 parking spaces are 45 parking spaces accessible to those with disabilities and 69 electric vehicle charging spaces. The building’s electrical service is sized to accommodate a capacity of 280 EV charging stations in the future.

The parking garage will contain five elevators located strategically to serve both the hospital main and emergency entrances, as well as the Adirondack Bank and Nexus centers and other local destinations. The exterior will be clad with precast concrete panels that features lighting along Oriskany Street that can be programmed to coordinate with downtown events.

“This state-of-the-art parking facility is designed to serve the hospital campus, as well as the greater downtown Utica area,” said Matthew Lacey, Principal, MARCH Associates Architects and Planners. “We have worked hard to balance the needs of MVHS and Oneida County and we are confident that our design meets that challenge. We are fortunate to be working with a dedicated and experienced team to achieve the ambitious goals of this parking facility project.”

The facility is currently scheduled to be completed in March 2024.
